Medical Equipment Repairer

Do you like working with your hands? Do you enjoy solving problems and fixing equipment? Medical Equipment Repairers maintain and service electrical equipment used in the health field. Most employers prefer candidates with associate's degrees in biomedical technology or engineering.

Diablo Valley College's Electrical / Electronics Technology program prepares students for careers involving electrical products, including those used in the medical field. Students earn an Associate in science degree and are prepared to install, maintain and service electrical equipment. Courses may prepare student for the Electricians Trainee Program.

Respiratory Therapy

Do you like working directly with patients? Do you enjoy solving problems, assessing patient needs and implementing health plans? Respiratory Therapists provide treatment for those suffering from cardiopulmonary issues. Respiratory Therapists work under the supervision of the physician, but must demonstrate independent judgment skills.

Diablo Valley College's Respiratory Therapy program is offered in conjunction with Ohlone College (http://www.ohlone.edu/instr/rt/) in Fremont. Students complete general education courses at DVC while attending Ohlone College for laboratory and clinical courses. This program prepares students to be respiratory therapists, helping to treat and care for patients in hospitals, medical offices and home environments. Students earn an Associate in science degree and are prepared for the registered respiratory therapist (RRT) credentialing examination.

The average wage in the bay area is $38.41 an hour. The need for Respiratory Therapist is projected to grow 28% by 2020.

Medical Laboratory Technician / Clinical Laboratory Technologist

Do you enjoy collecting samples, analyzing the specimens and then communicating the results to other Health Care Professionals? Medical Laboratory Technicians use science to process blood, tissue and cells to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Diablo Valley College offers a two-year Medical Laboratory Technology program in partnership with John Muir Health. This program prepares students for careers working in hospital laboratories, research laboratories, biotechnology and more. Students can obtain a Certificate of Achievement or an Associate in Science Degree.

The average wage in the bay area is $22.48 an hour. The need for Medical Laboratory Technicians is projected to increase slightly over the next several years.

Career Highlight: Dental Laboratory Technician

Do you have the mind of a scientist and an artist? Dental Laboratory Technicians use science to work with dentists to manufacture dentures, crowns and other dental prosthetics. Each project requires the skills of an artist to create unique solutions for each patient.

Diablo Valley College offers two programs in Dental Laboratory Technology. These programs prepare students for careers in Dental Laboratory Technology and for the National Comprehensive Examination.

The average wage in the bay area is $21.10 an hour. The need for Dental Laboratory Technicians is projected to increase slightly over the next several years.
