Transitional Kindergarten Overview

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a state reform authored by Senator Simitian as
SB 1381. The bill changes the kindergarten entry age in California from five years old by December 2 to five years old by September 1. (Kindergarten Readiness Act, Simitian, 2010) The law incrementally moves the kindergarten entry age one month a year throughout a three-year period (California Education Code 48000):

  • In 2012-13 school year a kindergarten student will be required to be 5 years old
    by November 1
  • In 2013-14 school year a kindergarten student will be required to be 5 years old
    by October 1
  • In 2014-15 school year a kindergarten student will be required to be 5 years old
    by September 1

Transitional Kindergarten is year one of a two-year kindergarten experience. Transitional Kindergarten provides California's young children with the time necessary to develop the social, emotional, and academic skills needed to successfully complete kindergarten.

The Contra Costa County Office of Education is committed to supporting districts in the implementation of SB 1381 by providing facts about the law, resources, and additional local and statewide events and activities.
