The Contra Costa County Office of Education is committed to supporting school readiness and early learning so that all children have the opportunity to achieve early and long-lasting success in their educational careers.

Transitional Kindergarten Overview
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a state reform authored by Senator Simitian as
SB 1381. The bill changes the kindergarten entry age in California from five years old by December 2 to five years old by September 1. (Kindergarten Readiness Act, Simitian, 2010) The law incrementally moves the kindergarten entry age one month a year throughout a three-year period (California Education Code 48000):
- In 2012-13 school year a kindergarten student will be required to be 5 years old
by November 1 - In 2013-14 school year a kindergarten student will be required to be 5 years old
by October 1 - In 2014-15 school year a kindergarten student will be required to be 5 years old
by September 1
Transitional Kindergarten is year one of a two-year kindergarten experience. Transitional Kindergarten provides California's young children with the time necessary to develop the social, emotional, and academic skills needed to successfully complete kindergarten.
