Careers
with Children
Work
with preschool children on campus and in local preschools. Areas covered
are: stages of child development, parent-child relationships, nutrition,
age-appropriate activities, health and safety issues, types of child
care facilities and licensing. Meets state requirements for beginning
employment as a preschool teacher assistant. Prerequisite: proof of
negative TB test. Antioch High School and Mt. Diablo High School students
must schedule a double period.

Certified Nursing Assistant/Acute Care
Students
will learn to perform basic nursing assistant skills and duties in the
acute care setting, including community health facilities and acute
care hospitals. Course includes patient assessment, observation, nursing
assistant skills and basic long-term care procedures, with additional
emphasis on specialized acute care areas, such as medical/surgical,
pediatrics, obstetrics, rehabilitation, orthopedics, and assisting with
physical examination.

Cosmetology/Manicuring/Esthetician
Prepare to take State Board exams. 1,600 hours of instruction required
for cosmetology, 400 hours for manicuring and 600 hours for esthetician.
The esthetician course is offered at Paris Beauty College and World Vision
only. High school students must attend 20 hours per week.

EMT -- Emergency Medical Technician I
Includes skills and knowledge required to provide emergency care: injury assessment; appropriate administration of ermgency medical care; and how to life, move, and position patient to minimize discomfort and prevent further injury.
Prerequisites: Current CPR-BLS card. Must be 18 by completion of course.

Fire Science
Students learn fire science, use of fire fighting equipment, methods of rescue, emergency procedures, and fire department organization. Students will be given the opportunity to go through a practice interview for firefighters by taking a written test, physical ability test and oral exam.

Health Careers Core
An 11th grade
course. Participate in job-shadowing, explore social and ethical issues
that impact the health industry, and develop competency in workplace procedures
and skills in medicine and health care. Develop a personal career and
educational plan as it relates to a specific career choice, requirements
within the industry, and the rapidly changing opportunities in health
careers. Prerequisite: Member of Liberty High School Health Career Academy.

A 12th grade course. Advanced level skills developed through classroom
instruction and internships at local medical facilities. Prerequisite:
member of Liberty High School Health Career Academy. Completion of Health
Career Core.

Hospital Health Careers
Classroom instruction and internships for entry-level work in a hospital
setting. Instruction includes medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology,
history of medicine, ethics and confidentiality, customer service and
body mechanics. Students in Deer Valley High class serve clerical internships
at Sutter Delta Medical Center in the following departments: Physical
Therapy, Dietary, Billing, Radiology, Pharmacy, Central Supply, Occupational
Therapy, Social Work or other clinical areas.
Prerequisite:
Instructor approval, transportation to internship site, and proofs of
negative PPD test (for tuberculosis). Basic skills test may be given.

Law Enforcement Careers
Students learn the structure and organization of the criminal justice system and gain knowledge of basic police procedures, regulations and responsibilities. Included is an overview of codified law and penal code, laws of arrest, search and seizure guidelines, patrol and investigations procedures, and emergency response, field trips to police stations and courtrooms. Emphasis is placed on developing awareness of citizens' rights and responsibilities, the realities of police work and the positive role of law enforcement in the community.

Medical Front Office
This course prepares students for medical clerical employment as a medical front office assistant or in a department of an acute care hospital, acure care clinic, or health maintenance organization (HMO). Instruction covers patient charting, vital signs, pharmacology, antiseptic procedures, medical ethics, basic medical terminology and general safety.

and treatment of injuries. Course includes CPR certification and first
aid, plus 5 hours per week of hands-on training at sporting events.
