She is the only recipient from Contra Costa County, and among five in the state, to have earned the honor. Heritage High School's Mason Tan was also a California finalist in the competition. The students competed in a rigorous 48-hour competition designed to evaluate the aptitude in combating cyber threats and showing the best of what California schools have to offer.

Lee and Tan among 5,000 high school students out of over 300,000 from across the United States to advance out of the first round of the competition. Of those, Lee was one of only 30 students in the country that performed well enough to earn the National Cyber Scholar with Honors accolade. The honor includes a $3,000 scholarship and an invitation to participate in the Cyber Foundations Academy, a multi-week training and certification course.

Tan was among the 862 highest-scoring students in the competition. For that, he receives free access to the Cyber Foundations Academy

There are several qualification pathways for the National Cyber Scholarship Competition, including CyberStart America, a free online program that helps students discover their interest in cybersecurity and develop their talent and skills. The NCSF offers 600 college scholarships to top-ranking competitors. Additionally, National Cyber Scholars, along with the competition’s 1,000 finalists, are invited to participate in the Cyber Foundations Academy.

Cybersecurity is one of the world’s fastest growing industries. The National Cyber Scholarship Foundation is working to address the current cyber skills shortage by developing and championing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals, through the provision of $2 million in college scholarships and $13.8 million in cybersecurity training.

The purpose of the National Cyber Scholarship program is to identify hidden talents in students who may not otherwise consider cybersecurity as a profession; to nurture potential by providing free, intensive training; and to empower excellence by rewarding top performers with financial incentives to support future cybersecurity study.
