Fire SciencePLEASANT HILL, Calif. - Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) offers a Regional Occupational Program (ROP) class at Freedom High School, a hands-on course taught by retired firefighter Jim Scarbrough. Students learn the science behind fires and participate in drills that help them understand how to knockdown and fight fires. During the drills, students are suited up in real firefighter gear and utilize fire hoses, stairs, and real life situations one might face as a firefighter.

Fire Science is made possible through CCCOE's ROP program where an instructor has a CTE credential to teach the course. Additionally, this course is a dual enrollment class, meaning students receive high school and college credit for taking the course. It is also aligned with Los Medanos College's (LMC) firefighter program. Students who take the course at Freedom High School also receive credit for Fire Science 101 at LMC.

Fire Science is also connected to CCCOE's College and Career Readiness Program, which works with local school districts to support Career Technical Education (CTE) courses in high demand and high wage fields. The course is designed to engage students in firefighting skills and showcases potential career opportunities. Since the course began, more than 50 students have gone on to become professional firefighters.
