Black Diamond High School in Pittsburg, California has been named a 2024 California Model Continuation High School (MCHS), State Superintendent of Public instruction Tony Thurmond announced this week. Black Diamond is among 31 schools throughout the state selected for the award. It is the third time the school has received the Model Continuation High School distinction, following its recognition in 2020 and 2017.

California High School Wins Seventh Consecutive Contra Costa County Mock Trial Title

For the seventh consecutive year, California High School has won the Contra Costa County Mock Trials championship, the Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) announced at an awards ceremony on Thursday evening. California High School, led by Coach Brian Barr, defeated Campolindo High in the final trial that took place on Tuesday, February 13, 2023, at the A.F. Bray Courthouse in Martinez. California High will now represent Contra Costa County at the California Mock Trial Finals in March. The final trial was presided over by Judge Christopher Bowen and scored by a panel of four attorneys. Deer Valley High school placed third after defeating Miramonte High School in the consolation trial.

Ariana Salvador, a senior at Pinole Valley High School, is Contra Costa County’s 2024 Poetry Out Loud winner. With dramatic and expressive recitations of poems by Tanaya Winder and Roisin Kelly, Salvador became the county champion during the annual poetry event on February 10, 2024, at Del Val Theater in Walnut Creek. She was awarded a $250 scholarship and will now compete at the state level. Second place was awarded to Brooke Sanders, a senior at San Ramon Valley High School. Runner-up Sanders received a $100 scholarship.

Maxwell succeeds Board Member Consuelo Lara, who served in the position in 2023. Each December, the Board of Education selects members to serve in the roles of president and vice president.

Created by the agency’s Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) department, the resource was inspired by April Rovero, Founder/ Director of National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse (NCAPDA), to equip adults with knowledge and resources they need to support young people in their lives to make positive decisions regarding their health.

Students of Excellence Awards Ceremony Recognizes Outstanding Achievements in Career Technical Education Courses

Some 50 students were nominated to be Students of Excellence recipients, and 39 won the award based on their teachers' recommendations and the nominee’s submitted statement. School-aged scientists recently competed to represent Contra Costa County in state, national, and international science contests. 110 student projects were submitted for judging at the Contra Costa County Science & Engineering Fair (CCCSEF) in March. Of those, 18 were selected to compete in the California Science & Engineering Fair and three projects will represent CCCSEF at the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) in May. Three projects in the Junior Division Grand Sweepstakes became eligible to compete at Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge held in October 2023 in Washington, DC.
