PLEASANT HILL, Calif., September 20, 2022 —Five Contra Costa County schools were selected as 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond congratulated the Contra Costa County Schools along with 24 other schools throughout the state last week.

“Congratulations to the students, families, and educators that make up these outstanding, vibrant, and affirming school communities,” Thurmond said. “As we continue to recover from the pandemic, this award validates the hard work of educators across the state on behalf of our students. Their commitment to meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of all their students has helped transform the lives of students during extraordinary circumstances.”

This prestigious award honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools that close achievement and opportunity gaps and where students achieve high learning standards. Schools receiving this special honor demonstrate an overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. These Contra Costa County schools are among the state’s highest performing schools based on all student scores, subgroup student scores, and graduation rates.

“We would like to congratulate Orinda Intermediate School, Coyote Creek Elementary School, Gale Ranch Middle School, Iron Horse Middle School, and Windemere Ranch Middle School for receiving this distinction and honor,” Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey said. “The National Blue Ribbon Schools award is a direct result of the dedication and determination from students, families, and educators working together to create learning experiences where scholars feel safe and have the ability to excel at their coursework in a welcoming environment.”

National Blue Ribbon Schools are a beacon for schools still striving for excellence. In its 39-year history, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has presented this award to more than 9,000 schools.

Public schools are nominated by top education officials in each state, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the Bureau of Indian Education.
