PITTSBURG, Calif., March 7, 2021 – On March 4, the Pittsburg Unified School District’s Facilities Department hosted a virtual Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to celebrate the district’s new Parkside Elementary School. The new 85,976 square-foot Parkside Elementary School is located at 985 West 17th Street in Pittsburg, California. It was constructed on the same campus as the previous school, which was built in the 1950s.

After demolishing the old building, a new Net-Zero school was erected in its place. The project took more than a year to complete and cost $45,250,000. This new school was made possible because residents in the City of Pittsburg have continued to support school bonds. Funds from Measure N and Measure P paid for the new Parkside Elementary School.

“I’m incredibly proud of the new Parkside Elementary School,” said Jeff Varner, Parkside Elementary School principal. This school is more than just a school, it is part of the community. This new school was made possible because of the taxpayers in Pittsburg and I thank them for supporting schools and education in our community.”

“This school was carefully designed with the input of our teachers, staff, students, and community members,” said Dr. Janet Schulze, superintendent of Pittsburg Unified School District. “The new Parkside is absolutely gorgeous with its bright paint colors, wide hallways, natural sunlight, beautiful playground, and state-of-the-art technology. Our scholars and teachers are going to love it.”

“The new Parkside Elementary School was built with Net-Zero energy ideas that will dramatically decrease the school’s utility bills,” said Larry Scott, facilities director at Pittsburg Unified School District. “We incorporated solar panels, ceiling fans, special lighting, and energy efficient technology into the design of this school and the district will see cost savings on energy costs for years to come!”

More than ten years of planning with the School Board, principal, students, teachers, and community members went into this project. The two-story school includes a multipurpose room with state-of-the-art technology for theater performances, music concerts, and school functions. Parkside Elementary School can accommodate 900 students and a full complement of teachers and staff.
