Contra Costa County Office of Education

• The HiSET Proficiency assesses 12th-grade standards in Language Arts (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics.  Passing all three subtests earns eligible students a California Certificate of Proficiency, which is legally equivalent to a California high school diploma.

• A California Certificate of Proficiency is widely accepted at all California Community Colleges, CSUs, and UC campuses.  (Note: Always check with your prospective college regarding specific admission coursework.)

• The certificate is fully recognized as a high school diploma equivalent by California employers.

• After exiting high school, you can take two additional HiSET subtests (Science and Social Studies) to earn a full California High School Equivalency Certificate, which is recognized across the U.S. and internationally.
