Contra Costa County Office of Education

CCCOE Suicide Prevention and Intervention Policy and Protocol

The Contra Costa Office of Education understands that suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among young people, and that schools play a powerful role in prevention. Educators and school staff are often the first to notice when a student is in distress. That's why CCCOE has developed a comprehensive Suicide Prevention and Intervention policy toolkit, a practical, read-to-adopt resource to help schools create a safe, supportive, and responsive environment for all students.

This toolkit goes beyond our board policy and provides actionable procedures for:

  • Preventing suicide through early identification and awareness,
  • Supporting students at risk with timely interventions, and
  • Responding effectively to suicide-related crisis in the school community.

Whether your school is updating its current policies or building them from the ground up, this toolkit offers a clear, adaptable framework aligned with state law and best practices. It can serve as a trusted guide for district leaders, educators, counselors, and community partners.

At the Wellness in Schools Program, we are deeply committed to fostering school culture that prioritize mental health and student well-being. We invite all schools and districts to use this policy as a foundation for their own suicide prevention and intervention efforts, because together, we can build safer, healthier communities for our youth.

The Bridge Between Suicide and Life - Video
For many years, Sergeant Kevin Briggs had a dark, unusual, at times, strangely rewarding job: he patrolled the southern end of the San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. In a sobering, deeply personal talk, Briggs shares stories from those he's spoken - and listened - to standing on the edge of life. He offers a powerful piece of advice to those with loved ones who might be contemplating suicide.
