Village Community Resource Center Named Education Champion for Providing Vital Services to Families in East Contra Costa County

PLEASANT HILL, Calif., — Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey recognized Village Community Resource Center (VCRC) as the Education Champion for the month of October 2023 at the most recent county Board of Education meeting. Executive Director Kirsten Rigsby of VCRC and her colleagues were thanked for providing comprehensive resources to East County families, such as after-school programs, parent support groups, mental health services, food distribution, summer programs, and a youth leadership track.

“The services Village Resource Center provides to children and families in East County are vital supports that help build a foundation for learning, which is something people in our communities sorely need,” Superintendent Mackey said. “Community partners that provide a safe space for children to thrive are Education Champions to spotlight because we value the work you all do. We see firsthand the successes children achieve because of the influence they received from caring adults at organizations like VCRC. Thank you, VCRC, for continuing to spread your mission and vision to families in East County.”

Poverty and family stress are barriers to kids succeeding in school; therefore, VCRC uses its services and collaborations as catalysts to help East County families become stronger and more empowered to raise healthy and resilient children. A non-profit community center since 1995, VCRC has locations in Brentwood, Byron, and Oakley. Since the organization was founded, VCRC has collaborated with homeowners, police departments, local businesses, and charitable foundations to provide a safe, fun place where kids can gather, play, and learn.

The Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Education recognize Education Champions, like VCRC, for going above and beyond to support students, schools, and education programming in Contra Costa County. Education Champions help create opportunities, build relationships, and provide a valuable resource to schools and the students they serve.
